Research firm Canalys has reported that, thanks to the iPad, Apple computer sales jumped a whopping 241% in the fourth quarter of 2010 compared to the same quarter in 2009, making it the third-largest computer manufacturer by market share. Apple’s share of the computer market catapulted from 3.8% to 10.8%. Apple remains behind Acer (12.8%) and HP (17.7%).
While there are some who might argue that the iPad should not be taken into consideration when calculating Apple’s share of the computer market, we think that it makes perfect sense. The iPad is simply a computer with a different interface and operating system than what traditional computers are equipped with, but it is a computer nonetheless. The market share comparison also includes netbooks, most of which cost far less than the iPad.
