Apple has announced a media event for the unveiling of the iPad 2. The event will take place on March 2, next Wednesday. Although the iPad 2 was originally expected to have such fanciful features as a Retina Display with an outrageous resolution that would trump most laptop — and even some desktop — screens, the rumor mills now generally accept that the iPad 2 will be merely an incremental upgrade for the iPad line (possibly with something even better coming out toward the end of 2011).
The biggest news, of course, is that Apple is expected to release a CDMA model of the iPad 2, to support the Verizon network (and possibly other CDMA networks such as Sprint Nextel and Virgin Mobile in the future). Aside from that, the iPad 2 is expected to be a little faster, with upgrades to the processor, GPU and RAM, and possibly a little thinner as well. The iPad 2 is also expected to have a larger, higher-quality speaker and an additional I/O port — likely a Mini DisplayPort.
