iPhone 5 Could Have Curved Aluminum Back

iPhone 5 Could Have Curved Aluminum Back

Mar 7, 2011

Japanese website MacOtakara predicts that Apple will change the design of the iPhone 5 so that it looks more like the iPad — not to mention the iPhone 3Gs — with a curved aluminum back rather than the straight glass one currently used. The website speculates that this decision has do do with Apple’s failure to produce a white iPhone 4, along with the glass back’s propensity for scratches and cracking. Additionally, an aluminum back would allow the iPhone 5 to have an internal antenna, thus ending the problems that customers experienced with decreased signal on the iPhone 4 when holding the phone in a certain way.

It is worth noting that MacOtakara correctly predicted in December that the iPad 2 would have a larger speaker and cameras.

Some Apple fans might view this as a step back — particularly if they liked the design of the iPhone 4. However, we always appreciated the curved back of the earlier iPhone models and felt it gave the iPhone a sleek appearance. What do you think?

A curved back would look unattractive. Just add an aluminum back to the flat back design and voilĂ !

  2. The curved back of the 3GS had a much better feel in your hand than the brick-like iPhone 4. I would love to see an iPad 2-like curved back in the iPhone 5 (4S).
