News Corporation launched The Daily today. The Daily is perhaps the first major launch ever of a traditional newspaper exclusively for an electronic device — and if it isn’t the first, it is at least the most hyped. Announcements of the imminent release have been circulating on mainstream websites all over the Internet for months.
So, can traditional news survive on The Daily? It does have several things going for it. The photography appears excellent, and it appears as though The Daily will have several features that wouldn’t be possible with a real newspaper. For example, the appearance of The Daily is similar to that of a high-quality print magazine, but a new issue arrives each day, like a newspaper. The individual stories are updated in real-time, like a website.
Also, it will almost certainly have a comment system to allow readers to discuss stories with one another in the application. This makes The Daily appear as though it will provide the best of all news media. Most importantly, the writing should be top-notch, considering the amount of money that News Corporation is putting behind this project.
The Daily is free to download, and costs $.99 for a two-week preview. After that period, it costs $.99 per week or $39.99 per year.
