Rumor: iPhone 4S/5 to Have Curved Glass

Rumor: iPhone 4S/5 to Have Curved Glass

May 23, 2011

Taiwanese computer hardware publication DigiTimes has published a report today stating that the iPhone 5 (or perhaps the iPhone 4S) will have a curved glass front, citing “industry sources.” According to the report, Apple has bought as many as 300 glass cutting machines capable of manufacturing these curved surfaces and is already in the process of improving yield rates for eventual production.

Using a curved glass front for the iPhone does not necessarily mean that the screen itself will be curved. More likely, the iPhone 5 (4S) will have a curved glass surface adhered to a flat screen, similar to that of the Google/Samsung Nexus. The Nexus has a very slight concave curve, which is intended to make the phone rest more comfortably against the face. According to reports, the curved glass does not affect the sensitivity of the touch screen.
