Robert X. Cringely predicts that the upcoming white iPhone 4, which will have been delayed by nearly a year by the time it is released, has been delayed not because of production troubles, but because the white iPhone 4 is the CDMA iPhone that Apple is rumored to be producing for Verizon. Cringely also predicts that the white iPhone 4 will be exclusive to Verizon, giving unhappy AT&T customers yet another reason to change providers.
It is not unusual at all for a phone carrier to have an exclusive color of a sought-after phone. The BlackBerry Pearl was one example of this, with the phone being released for several colors simultaneously and certain colors only being available through certain carriers. Therefore, Cringely may be on to something. If Apple does indeed release an iPhone supporting Verizon this year, it seems all but certain that the iPad 2 will be available in a CDMA version for Verizon.
