“Whenever I open the Start screen in Windows 8, I see a number at the bottom of the tile for the App Store. I assume this has something to do with the number of new applications that have been added to the store recently, but I’m really not interested in that; I’ll browse the App Store when I’m in the mood. How can I prevent the Start screen from showing these updates?”
Some of the application tiles on the Windows 8 Start screen have the ability to change when the current status warrants. For example, the App Store tile shows the number of new applications that have been added, while the Weather tile displays an asterisk if your city has an active weather advisory. If you like, you can disable a live tile on the Start screen to prevent it from displaying updates.
- Move the mouse pointer to the lower-left corner of the screen if you are currently viewing the desktop. You should now see the Start tile. Click it to view the Start screen.
- Right-click the live tile for which you want to disable updates.
- Click Turn live tile off at the bottom of the screen.
